Gut Rumbles

April 14, 2005

I do not believe in God. I do not pray and I never say grace over a meal (unless I am a guest at someone's house and they ask me to. I can be quite eloquent then. I am a Southern boy.).

I see the world as chaotic, not controlled by any divine hand. I see Man as a creature capable of incredible nobility or absolute ignominy, depending on the person. I trust myself more than I do anybody else.

But I also remain superstitious as hell.

Maybe I grew up around too many hillbillies who believed in signs and omens, and they practiced what they preached. I was told from an early age that someone skilled in witchery could put "the evil eye" on you, and cause bad things to happen. I've seen water-wanders, snake-handlers, faith-healers and people who spoke in tongues when the spirit hit them. I thought it was all crap.

But I believe in premonitions. I am superstitious and I really DO think that what you "feel" often comes from your subconscious mind, picking up signals that you don't really detect at the time. That's what puts the rumble in your gut and goosebumps on your skin. That's what makes the hair curl on the back of your neck.

You FEEL it, but you don't know why.

I've had a premonition. Something bad is about to happen to me.

Thank (insert name of important, perhaps divine being here) you finally posted today. Now I can get some sleep. I hope your premonition is just a wish that disappears without coming true. I hope something good happens instead; I know you need something good right now.

I found a cool site today, you have probably already seen it, but just in case others want to check it out, go to and do a search for Gut Rumbles. Iused the "wayback machine" to look at what the site looked at in 2002. Very cool site.

I could be a dumbass liar and say it is all in the mind, but I don't really believe that. Be carefull of dodgy moonshine and have fun while you can, that's all that can be said.

Ya think the lot of you will get arrested for something or other?

I've dealt with "doom" clouds before that turned out to be mis-calibrated anticipation. When I was depressed or stressed, what should have made me excited, made me feel like my life was about to end. I've learned to take them with a grain of salt now.

If you step on the chalk marking the baselines, you will have bad luck. Also, it is bad luck to get up to bat without adjusting your crotch. If you follow those rules, you will be okay.

After reading the recipe for Velociman's Artillery Punch, I think you're about to experience the hangover of a lifetime.

Maybe it's just a delayed (by what? over three years?) reaction.
The bad shit has already happened to you, Honey.

In fact, you're more than due for a whole shitload of "good" and not just because of all the bad shit that's happened, but also because of what you've done for me.

You literally saved me, Rob.

You were my first step out of hell and things have gotten steadily better since I first found you and started blogging myself.
That got me "out of myself" quite a bit, then I found Paul (Light and Dark), then I "met" a coupla other awesome people and started opening up to life for a change.

I really believe that every step I've taken since the first day I read you has been THANKS TO you.

You got me standing tall these days, face up offa the ground and outta the dirt.

I've been following your footprints for so long now... I'm not done yet, either, so you're gonna be fine.

I've been so blessed since I found you and it's just getting better and better every day... it's bound to come back to you. All the good you've done me and so many others... it WILL come back to you.

Just "maintain" til it does, okay?

I listen to my gut allll the time and I feel nothing about anything bad happening to you or Cat.

You're gonna both be fine.

And, for the record...
I don't think it really matters whether or not you believe in God.
It's obvious He believes in you.

He is working through you and I am living proof.

"the rumble in your gut and goosebumps on your skin. That's what makes the hair curl on the back of your neck."

It's not a premonition that means something bad is going to happen, it just means God is looking out for you, rather you believe in him or not. He still believes in you.

Sounds like you have some interesting things to write about - snake handlers, water wanders, signs and omens, premonitions...
