the worst i've ever seen

I've been watching the news today. Some of the reports I've seen from Mississippi and Louisana make me think I'm looking at scenes from Rwanda or some other primitive, third-world country.

BEJUS! The destruction is almost incomprehensible to me. Some "experts" are predicting more than 10,000 people dead in New Orleans alone. Most of the residential areas of that city are still under 20' of water.

FEMA finally got moving and started to bring food, water and medicine into the area today. 600 National Guard troops showed up with automatic weapons to restore law and order. The plan seems to be to evacuate New Orleans right down to the last living person.

The problem now is where to put all of those people. They've already filled the Houston Astrodome (Houstonites--- be proud of what you did) and now authorities are running out of places to put the refugees.

Imagine that. We now have "refugees" in the USA.

We also had gangs of looters and roving thugs who started fires and picked gun fights with the people coming to rescue them. They raped and pillaged with total abandon. Some of the tales from the Superdome are horrendous. But the thugs disappeared when troops with M-16s showed up on the street corners.

I've always said that a real crisis brings out both the best and the worst in people. Just look at New Orleans and tell me I'm mistaken.

(UPDATE: I just heard on the news that the thugs are at it again. They are shooting at the firefighters who came to stop New Orleans from burning. They've killed one sheriff's deputy and still are shooting from the rooftops. I hope the troops have orders to shoot to kill. I also hope that they don't miss when they train their sights on a thug. I don't want assholes like that in MY world.)

last I read the Nat Guard had orders to shoot to kill-it is a suburban house to house ops to clean 'em out just as if they are terrorists-which they are!

All I could think of is that this reminds me of Lord of the Flies - they're turning into animals...

President George Bush has conceded the initial response to Hurricane Katrina was "not acceptable" but has said every effort is being made to save lives.

Heavily-armed National Guardsmen have begun pouring into New Orleans, where thousands remain stranded without food or water amid rising lawlessness.

A large military convoy carrying aid also entered the city on Friday.

Visiting the region, Mr Bush said order would be restored and New Orleans would emerge from its "darkest days".

"My attitude is, if it's not going exactly right, we're going to make it go exactly right. If there's problems, then we'll address the problems," Mr Bush said. "Every life is precious and so we are going to spend a lot of time saving lives, whether it be in New Orleans or on the coast of Mississippi. We have a responsibility to help clean up this mess."

Speaking in Mobile, Alabama, Mr Bush said a $10.5bn (£5.7bn) emergency aid approved by the Senate was "just a small down-payment" on the cost of helping people rebuild.

He went on to visit Biloxi, on the Mississippi coast, where he comforted a woman who wept as she described how she had lost everything. Bet she felt better now that GB had comforted her? You must be so glad you elected him.

I heard on the news that now that our astrodome is filled up they are going to try to take some refugees to San Antonio. I think Gov. Perry said we were busing between
75-100,000 people in.

A church down the street from where I live took in about a hundred people who were turned away from the dome. These were people who drove to Texas and escaped before the storm.

We have had an influx of people here in the Dallas area too. They are trying their best to accomodate as many people as possible.

The animal rescue group I work for is being over loaded with animals that were seperated from their owners and need homes.

Something needs to be done about the thugs, now! They can't be allowed to continue!

I feel for the good people who just want some relief. The thugs can go to Hell!

Lotsa nice, new folks in Dallas today. All seem happy to be here. And all seem to very happy with the way they are being received and treated.

One teensy problem did surface, however. A local do-gooder has informed the news media that we shouldn't refer to our guests as "refugees". It might harm them emotionally.

Meteorologically relocated Americans, maybe?

Best headline I've read all day:

Do it!

SHOOT TO KILL, TROOP TOLD
14:00 AEST Fri Sep 2 2005
AFP
By Mira Oberman and Patrick Moser in New Orleans
Agence France-Presse
Iraq-tested US troops with shoot-to-kill orders were deployed in New Orleans today to restore law and order after days of chaos and looting in the hurricane-devastated city.

General Russel Honore gave orders to put firearms across the back, or pointed down; he said these people are Americans, not refugees, and should be given the respect of Americans...but, a sniper shot at an emergency crew attempting to evacuate a hospital!

Texas rsidents are being asked to house the displaced citizens of New Orleans...after what I've heard, that seems awlful scarry...better to house them in tent communities 20 miles outside of New Orleans. And, get the military in there, to establish order!

I seriously doubt the 'shoot to kill' order. Remember now, the governor of La. really doesn't have any balls and evidently not much mind. She is the one who dropped the ball in having the national guard federalized and federal troops brought in. The President declared the area a disaster two days before it really became a disaster but the 'whoevers' in La. failed to take advantage. Now they have an armed rebellion by the sub-humans and no one to stop them until today. Of course the left wing whacko's seem to think the U.S. should have 50,000 armed troops sitting in trucks loaded with relief supplies 24-7. Maybe we could if we hadn't lost over 40% of the military during the lying 90's. My question has been (for the last 5 years) is where is the equipment for almost a million troops who were eleminated, who was it sold to, and who got the money? You can bet it's missing and the money didn't make it to the treasury..
Could that be how so many in Slick Willie's regime , including him and the weasel, came to D.C. broke and left multi-millionaires.

My first post on this got the beginning lobbed off but you should get the idea anyway.

The Federal troops deployed to La. would definetly be scared to shoot anyone. There has been dozens of them put on trial for killing the enemy in a war. The left wing whacko's would have a field day and the soldier that did his job would end up in prison. That is a fact in the totally destroyed joke of a justice system we have now.

"a real crisis brings out both the best and the worst in people"

Indeed.

I agree with scrapiron - If I were being sent into NO as a National Guard troop I'd be faced with being shot by a thug, or going to prision for returning fire if fired upon. I'm afraid I'd go AWOL as the lesser of the evils.

Black Caucus.Buncha assholes. Saint Sharpton musta blessed them & gave 'em a mission.Fuck a buncha niggers. Who's doing the looting? I've seen no white people in any of the pictures. Handouts stopped, eh? So hand it out yerself, bust into stores & "get paid".*Spit*I've been no racist most of my life, actually marched in the 60's civil rights crap, but over the years, I've seen it IS actually crap. It started when they burned down there own fucking houses here in DC in 1968. Makes you go "Hmmm...."Now it's like Half Life 2... "We don't go into Ravenhome.. err... DC anymore".The looters & snipers when caught should be lined up against a wall (if any are still standing) and "educated" with a .50 cal at close range. This is America. Not Iraq. There is no room for this kinda bullshit here.Send 'em all to hell, let the Dark One sort 'em out. I don't think any "God" would want 'em.And Rob is right about the "Bruce" thing. Helping another suffering human doesn't require "breaking even" let alone a "reasonable profit". What fucking planet are some of you from?Asshats.

The best explanation I've seen for the aparently slow response of the Federal government is over at www.thedonovan.com..The guy is ex-military and was involved at some point in the laying out and planning for these sort of disasters............And I did catch that "Black Caucus" bit on the news. Can't someone like the spokesman forget about the supposed colour issue here and do something constructive. His short little statement just sounded like a prelude to shake the feds down for some more money.

I wish those politicians bitching and moaning would try to explain just how to get trucks into a city where the streets are flooded, roads washed away, bridges destroyed, and most roadways unable to bear more than one ton of weight, if that.

Short of commandeering every chopper in the country, there's no way we can get food and water to 100,000 people in one day. It's simply not physically possible. We're doing as good as we can under the circumstances, and if the mayor of NO and the govenor of Louisiana weren't such incompetant fucks, we could have prevented some of the problems we're facing now.

If the "Reverund" Jackson would like to take some of his extortion money and hire choppers to ferry food and water to people, fine. Otherwise, he and Sharpton and every other Race Baiting Poverty Pimp can kiss my hairy ass.

I sincerely doubt that any troops returning fire will be prosecuted. Especially not after firefighters were fired on, police were fired on and the level of anarchy in the city.
The Secret Service wouldn't even let the President of the United States go into New Orleans as aid helicopters have been fired upon.
If the troops aren't given a 'shoot-to-kill' order, their superiors should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of military law.
Occasionally, the forces of civilization have to use superior firepower to ensure the continuation of civilization.

If this were a bunch of drunk ass college kids, I would sure be inclined to agree...but in this instance, I'm pretty confident the full weight of public opinion backs the use of deadly force in New Orleans.
Screw the ACLU.
