tina turner

I was about to go to sleep when a music video came on my TV. I HAD to sit there and listen to it. It was Tina Turner singing "Proud Mary." GOT-DAM!!! Did she tear up that song, or what?

I saw her perform sometime around 1974 in Savannah. She was still married to Ike back then. I had nose-bleed seats in the arena and ended up sitting with a bunch of Black guys who all had half-pint bottles of liquor stashed in their pockets. I shared their wares. After about three songs, we all agreed that we should drag Ike off and shoot him and keep Tina for ourselves.

She's STILL a damn good-looking woman and she can sing her fine ass off. Bejus! She's got to be about 60 years old now. I hope I LIVE to see 60, let alone look the way she does.

Those legs... ohhhh... those legs....

Saw her open for the Stones in 1980.

She was still doing her classics and looked strong enough to drop-kick Mick across the Meadowlands Arena.

Saw Miss Tina twice in the summer of '96...and again in June of 2000.

In 2000, she did a version of Heard It Thru The Grapevine that blew the roof off the place (I cant say "dump", cuz it was a really nice venue)

The woman is amazing....and as far as her legs go, lets just say God was good to her, real real real good to her.

After seeing her perform, I said to my husband, "I can now die happy"....

I have seen lots of performers in my life (even saw Springsteen three times) and without a doubt, she is, pardon the phrase: "SIMPLY THE BEST"...

Met Ike and Tina in 72-73 or around that time. Willie Mitchel, my old mentor at HI Studios in Memphis, called me around 11 PM one night. "Get your narrow white ass down here. I'm doing Ike and Tina and we need you on a song.

Well, .006 seconds later I was in my car and haulin' the mail! Got there and their organ player was already behind the B3. The piano player was behind the piano. What the fuck am I doing here? Papa Willie informs me I'm to play vibraphone. VIBES?..I had never played the things in my life, but they do look like and are laid out like a piano on steroids. Thank God it was a slow ballad. Can't remember the title, but I muddled through it without loosing an eye. Tina was very nice....thanked me and wrote me a check. The whole time Ike sat in the guitar booth and never said a word to me. Prick!

I couldn't agree with you more. When I hear "Proud Mary", well, I just have to stop and listen and enjoy.

For a few minutes, it's all about the music, and nothing else.

Yeah, she's ALL that. What a classy lady, too, you know?

Posted by: Kelly on July 15, 2005 08:18 AM

Tina was born in 1938 ... that would make her "bout 67". When she divorced Ike, all she wanted in the settlement was her NAME (Tina Turner is not her real name). Ike had given her that name ... and she got the better deal in the divorce in the long run.

Yeah, she's something ain't she? I saw here back in the 70s and I saw her again a few years ago (2000 ?). She still kicks ass. Still looking good too. Ike was a fucking idiot for letting her get away.

Posted by: assrot on July 15, 2005 08:49 AM

Assrot - Ike was a fucking idiot who tried to keep Tina with him by beating the crap out of her and eriding her at any gievn opportunity. Fortunately - she's a VERY strong woman who had the sense to get the hell away from him.

After the Indy 500 this year, I told my wife that if Tina Turner or Danica Patrick ever came on to me, I would leave her in a heartbeat. She gave me permission without blinking an eye. I wonder why?

Posted by: Lee on July 15, 2005 09:22 AM

Actually, Ike was a fuckin' idiot for beating on her like he did.
And, for driving her away.
(He didn't "let" her get away. She escaped.)

And, Assrot, did I fix that commenting problem you had at my place?
Hope I did...

I know this is gonna make some people HOWL, but I actually like CCR's version of "Proud Mary" muuuuch better.

Posted by: Stevie on July 15, 2005 09:26 AM

I think it was written and first recorded by the CCR. My favorite version of Heard it thru the Grapevine is the CCR version.

DAMN!! I forget exactly which song it was she sang in the movie "Gimme Shelter" but I think it was "I've Been Loving You Too Long" (?)(Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.). Anywho, she reaches the climax of the song (literally AND figuratively), and she's shimmying and vibrating etc. and she throws back her head and wails and SNATCHES that mike off the stand like she's plucking your cock off at the moment of orgasm.........GOD Damn!! Makes me quiver and get oozin' every time I see it to this day.

Grace Slick once said of Jim Morrison that he was the closest thing to sex on records......Tina is that for me, and always has been.

I don't know if she really did come from a "little ol' town of Nutbush", but if she did, how apropo......

"After the Indy 500 this year, I told my wife that if Tina Turner or Danica Patrick ever came on to me, I would leave her in a heartbeat. She gave me permission without blinking an eye. I wonder why?"

I wouldn't give permission to LEAVE me..go have a good night or two at the most...take notes and let me try to that's a different story.

Posted by: Kelly on July 15, 2005 09:37 AM

Tina Turner had the crap beaten out of her by IKE? Really? Who knew? And she is a strong woman? Well shucks, more breaking news.....

Posted by: Ruth on July 15, 2005 10:28 AM

I heard it through the grapevine. Then I saw it in a movie. But I still don't know for sure.

Posted by: GUYK on July 15, 2005 10:30 AM

It simply amazes me how some people take everything you say, turn it around to mean something I DID NOT MEAN and then get the vapors over it. WTF ladies?

Posted by: assrot on July 15, 2005 11:55 AM

ASSROT I didnt take anything you said the wrong way....I was just reacting to the statement by someone else about Tina being abused (talk about stating the obvious)

Posted by: Ruth on July 15, 2005 12:17 PM

Hubby thinks she's hot (long as you don't look at her face, he says).

Posted by: Jane on July 15, 2005 12:30 PM

I think Tina is very attractive from head to toe...

Posted by: Ruth on July 15, 2005 01:05 PM

most people do not look as good as Tina at 60 when they are 20. I might give up those hopes if I were you, I know I have...

Posted by: ArmyWifeToddlerMom on July 15, 2005 02:39 PM

aye ARMYWIFE....I saw her at 60 and I was 40 something at the time....

I said to my husband, "I hope I look as good as her when I get to be 60"....

I am sure you can all guess what his response was....and seeing as how it was TINA he was talking about, I didnt even mind.....NOT ONE BIT.

Posted by: Ruth on July 15, 2005 02:46 PM

I had a chance to work with Tina, briefly, back when she was doing a demo track for a new musical I was involved with. Talk about a class act.

Posted by: Mr. Lion on July 15, 2005 02:55 PM

Never had the pleasure of seeing her perform live, but that woman puts every ounce of herself into performing. She is a wonder - she's got 20 years on me, and her legs still are the gold standard!!

Posted by: Barb on July 15, 2005 09:31 PM

She is a class act in every sense of the word. And yes indeed...legs (even at 60+) that go on forever! Yeah, Tina rocks.
