Gut Rumbles

February 12, 2005

I read this post and I started thinking about tying knots. I never was a Boy Scout, but I've been around boats a lot and I took a BUNCH of Confined Space Rescue training, where learning to tie interesting knots was REQUIRED to pass the course. Plus, at my age, playing with a limp piece of rope is something I've become accustomed to.

This is a picture of me teaching Stacey to tie a genuine Hangman's Noose, complete with the 13 twists above the loop. She was a quick study and got it right on her second try.

Heh. I think I ought to open a bondage school.

the bowline has been one of my favorites. You can put as much stress on it as you want and it will hold, but it unties with a neat flick of the loop.

I still have my knotrope from Boy Scouts. It's the one I used to use for knot-tying competitions, made of 5 feet of slick braided nylon, so it will slide against itself easier. Not much good for lashing anything, but you could name any knot ouf of the Boy Scout manual (and quite a few others as well), and I'd have it tied before you could say "Be Prepared".

I'm always amazed when I go out camping with non-scouters at the horrible tangles they use. Hell, I've seen people tie down loads on their trucks with waterski towropes, using godawful granny knots. I never drive behind those assholes.

I used to have my knotrope tied in a hangman's noose in my office, purely for fun, until HR made me take it down because I offended somebody. I'd like to think I offended the descendant of a hanged rustler or gunman, but I'm betting that was not the case...

Will you please come and teach me some of the more basic knots? Free dinner and lodging provided.

Umm, I thought you hired that cleaner. Not there's anything wrong with that picture.
