mules

Remember Festus Hagan on Gunsmoke? He rode a mule named Ruth and much preferred his mule over ANY horse. As well he should have.

mules are tough.

Well, there's something you don't see every day...

That's one badass mule, I'm betting he gets LOTS of respect from now on.

Yeah, I saw those pics a while back and wasn't surprised by them at all. Mules (and donkeys) have a keen sense of self preservation and unlike a horse, will generally stand and fight. That's why you'll often see herds of sheep with a donkey in the mix as well. Because they also have a natural aversion to canines, they make an excellent deterrent to coyotes and other predators.

A good friend of mine breeds mules, well donkey's and horses to get a mule anyway, and I love being around them. I only wish that people didn't have the misconception that mules are stubborn because they're not. They're smarter than a horse and will stop doing things they don't feel is productive or interesting. Keep it interesting for them and they'll be your best and most trusting bud.
