July 03, 2004rugbyI almost joined the Savannah Shamrocks rugby team when I was in college. I was still a jockstrap in those days and I played every intra-mural sport the school had to offer. I have trophies for softball, flag football, basketball, tennis and even TWO trophies for water polo. How many people do YOU KNOW who ever played water polo? (The most violent, exhausting game I ever played.) I liked the idea of playing rugby until I went and watched a game. Holy Bejus! That was like watching a mugging with rules. I enjoyed the party afterward (ruggers DO KNOW how to party after a game) but I decided not to join the team. Instead, I wrote a song about rugby. The Rugby Blues One day when I was feelin' mean They were one man short on the very first day Hey! I was scrumming! All kinds of bodies went flying by I was feeling poorly. All I could do was moan and cough I learned a lesson... I've pondered long on that fateful day (Words and music by Rob Smith, written in 1976) Comments
Great description !! [you might want to turn off your italics tag, btw] I fixed it, MB. But that song is real, and I wrote it after I watched my first ever rugby game. Posted by: Acidman on July 3, 2004 08:30 AMYour conclusion is spot on, for anyone who wants to suffer that kind of destruction to self has to be out of tiny mind !! ... I love watching Rugby... I used to love playing it... but, the ole ribcage ain't what it used to be... I prefer Rugby Union over Rugby League rules, however... and, yeah... the after-parties were incredible... Posted by: Eric on July 3, 2004 09:35 AMWater Polo is extremely exciting. Not only to play, but to watch. We had State Champion teams when I was in school. Now I can't even find anyone who knows what it is! Posted by: drc on July 3, 2004 11:45 AMPlayed rugby at U of Tenn 1974-1976 until I got the final ambulance ride. The aftergame parties were awesome. The home team supplied the keg(s) and a local bar (The Tap Room on 17th in Knoxville) hosted the party which consisted mostly of a rowdy song/beerfest competition between the two teams. Nobody showered or changed for the occasion- everyone wore their usually blood stained unis. Great crazy times- how did I live through that? I always thought that gridiron players were a bit soft compared to rugby players, no padding in rugby. Posted by: RanK on July 4, 2004 10:30 PMPost a comment
