Yes, we damn well can hear your hillbilly drawl. Yankee deaf have a real hard time with it though. So used to fast talkers...

He probably signs as well and that would be a fantastic thing for your son to learn from him. I am trying to learn from some of the kids I work with at the farm--some as young as 3--who are autistic or have other problems that interfere with their speech. I am considering taking a course......

As for us Yankees, they understand us much more easily as we actually pronounce our words properly and are usually quite articulate ;)

When a person loses one sense, some other sense typically becomes more acute in order to compensate. I doubt that the young man can detect a Yankee ACCENT, but he probably can SMELL a Yankee. (You do know, Rob, that Yankees smell funny.)

Yes, we do smell funny.........it's called CLEAN, as in SOAP!! And deodorant!! (cause even tho a yankee lady never 'sweats', some have been known to perspire now and again) LOL

While growing up I became best friends with a kid that was 75% deaf and another kid who had a disease in his eyes that made it real difficult for him to see. I gotta say it was interesting playing neighborhood games with them whenever anything had to be explained I was always yelling at one and keeping the other one from bumping into things. One day the two of them got in a fight and it was the funniest thing I ever seen I was laughing the whole time. I do think it's helped me be more tolerant of people with handicaps.
