The Patriot Act isn't what concerns me - that was BOUND to happen sooner or later, and it's not like the GOV. couldn't already fry our asses six ways from Sunday if they had a mind to.

It's Ashcroft's mindset that equates bringing a bottle of Valium back from Mexico with smuggling 2 tons of Opium into Baltimore Harbor that burns my ass.

Just more War on Drugs waste, fraud & abuse.

yeah the patriot act is a bad idea...and contrary to the left, ashcroft hasn't used the powers (yet)...but like you said, imagine janet reno with it...imagine nixon with it....therein is the major problem with the act...maybe the guys now aren't doing anything with it...but I'd hate to imagine a hillary clinton appointed AG with that power.
as to the senators who voted for it...yeah right...do they read anything? They give that task to their staff...mostly supplied from the ivy league schools...oh yeah...that makes me feel good.

That's PRECISELY the problem I have with the Patriot Act. Ashcroft may not be abusing those powers (blatantly), but some future Janet Reno could run wild.

Actually, I'm also tired of the knee-jerk reactions of people who make comments so extreme that they are discounted, even if the fundamental point is sound. Those comments (and the people who make them) are actually damaging to the cause they are trying to promote.

Ashcroft makes such a fine target, though, with his arrogant attitude. It's hard to not exaggerate in the manner of Mark Twain or Will Rogers when an opportunity arises to poke holes in someone in power who has Ashcroft's manner.

My point remains. The people going nuts now over nothing will DEFEAT any outcry over true abuses later. Goddam. Don't ever whine about being shot at until somebody actually shoots at you.

Bah. Why is it everyone in the tin foil hat crowd screams and whines about the Patriot Act, when all it does is expand powers that have existed in the FISA act of 1978 for 25 years to include terrorism suspects?

Myself, I'll take the chance that some administration in future may abuse the Patriot Act over the virtual certainty of some fucking lunatic with a low yield nuclear weapon popping the damn thing off in my back yard, the like of which will happen if we hamstring our intelligence community.

Just imagining Janet She-Man Reno gives me the willies, let alone her with the Patriot Act.

I could be wrong, but I'm near certain the P A originated on the left, who WERE dreaming of a Reno clone with a Patriot Act. They were harassing the right to help pass it before 9-11. I'm too lazy to research it right now. The act has at least one redeeming virtue: It eliminated the prohibition of mixing terrorist and criminal investigations. We have to ditch the anti- due process and invasion of privacy features. Just because they're not widely abused today doesn't mean they won't be tomorrow. Call/write/email your congressroach and sinator. They're supposed to be working for you. In Larry's fantasy world, they do.
