the game

I watched a titanic little-league football game tonight that ended in a 0-to-0 final score. Thank Bejus that they don't believe in overtime at my son's age. They would be playing until sometime next week.

Quinton wears number 30, which was MY number all through junior high and high school. He picked that number all by himself, and I am very proud that he did, but I have to admit that my son is no football player. He thinks he's still on the soccer field. He likes to dance around and run, but he DOES NOT like to hit anybody. I don't care what tall tales he spewed before. I watched him in action tonight, and my boy does not want to ACTUALLY HAVE CONTACT WITH ANYONE on the football field.

That's not a virtue for a football player. You simply have to go kamikaze sometimes, and I saw kids Quinton's age doing exactly that today. But Quinton never did.

I believe that it is his mama's doing. She never wanted him to play football anyway, and she probably warns him every day not to get hurt when he goes to practice. You can't have a pussy telling a boy how to play football. What can a pussy tell him about the game?

Well, she can't teach him to play football, but she can convince him to stick with SOCCER the rest of his life.

My aching ass.

Glad you were there. Give him a little space and rope. He'll find his stride and it won't matter what BC says.

The whole point of playing football is to learn how to take a lick, and get back up. Eventually, I realized about 11th grade I was too skinny for it and moved on to soccer. I rowed crew in college. Hated vomiting after a hard row against Yale or Harvard, though. That's a tough sport. Switched to rugby. I loved a sport that tapped the keg BEFORE the game started. I was still too skinny, though. Now I'm fat, slow, and ride a bicycle when I need to.

Maybe some kids just hate to smack people. I've had to call the cops on mine before, because they LIKED to intimidate people... That would be because of MY X. I prefer to see a kid mindfuck his way out of a bad situation, ......which of course has nothing to do with football. Sorry. Now, after I corrected all my spelling errors and made my point a little more succinct, I forgot what the topic was, entirely. Shit, it's late, and I'm never known for long sentences having a decent glow on, so ...I'll remember tomorrow. (Please, no jokes about remembering yesterday!)...sure can be long-winded, too. BTW, I fixed my kids! Love and the law can work wonders!

That has got to be frustrating. That would be like watching my husband try to teach my daugher how to draw or sing. I've done it, I do it now, and I know how it's done. He hasn't, he doesn't, and he never will. And that would make me a screaming maniac.

And when I was done watching, I'd run down to the "Hi Neighbor" and put one back just to settle my nerves.

Yeah, my ass wouldn't be the only thing that hurt after that game.

Posted by: mamamontezz on September 24, 2003 12:42 AM

Well, I THINK I might be echoing Maryann, tho it's hard to tell...

But, yeah --- maybe he just doesn't like the tackle 'em til ya hurt, rough and tumble of football. Doesn't mean the BC is breeding this in him --- maybe she is just letting him express his own feelings (I realize it might be hard to admit that the BC is sometimes right --- but NOBODY is wrong all the time).

OK, I'm a woman here, but frankly, I don't GET what is so great about people slamming themselves into each other over a ball. I can certainly understand how that might NOT be an inherent quality in a child --- male or female.

Cannot the positives of sports --- sportsmanship, team building, responsibility/reliability, even no pain/no gain, if that's your philosophy --- can't those all be imbued via soccer?

It could even be something as simple as Quinton is better at soccer than football, and therefore is drawn to one sport over another. Or maybe the practice times screw with his schedule, or the weather is a bitch. Or there's too much else on his plate (ie, homework/academics at this point can seem overwhelming if they are substantially more rigorous than earlier grades). Children at that age, I believe shouldn't be SHOVED into a sport. By that I mean, certainly encourage them to partake of support --- sometimes even INSIST, especially if they haven't been a team member before --- but just because Quinton doesn't like football doesn't mean he's any less your son....nor does that automatically make your ex the evil one.

A-Man: if he prefers soccer and is any good at it, encourage him to be the very best soccer player he knows how to be. As with music, some were born to play guitar, and others were born to play the trumpet.

Soccer may not be your preferred game, but that does not make it a bad sport. Try to look at this from Quinton's point of view and remember that each person is unique; the parent's part in this is to help Quinton be the best Quinton he can be.

Soccer can be pretty rough in its own right...but as for my kids, I just pray that the kid my child hits in football gets up! He is only 5 and takes out his 11 year old bro, from a three point stance (and I know he didn't get his athletics from his momma!)
good luck on this season though!

Soccer isn't that bad, as long as he does'nt pick up the "that guy brushed against me, so I'm going to throw myself at the ground and scream like I've been shot so I get a foul out of the ref" style of play that so many europeans seem to think is good strategy. Nahh scratch that, soccer sucks. If he doesn't want to tackle anyone, get him a bat and a glove.

CJ - nothing personal, really, but I don't think you're equipped to really understand it. I don't think females experience it in the same way males do.

I've played a lot of pick-up games. No pads, no holds barred, no keeping track of the damned score. The only rule we had was "take it easy on the little guys". Basically that meant no pile-driving them. The big guys were fair game, though.

We had a number of females play with us. Mostly they held their own. They enjoyed it, too. I don't think it was the same for them, though. I don't think they enjoyed the pain they took. Most of the males did. I really enjoyed playing halfback or nose tackle. It meant I was gonna slam into someone hard most every down. After about 4 hours of play, when every muscle starts to really ache, we'd call it a game and get some grub. Then we'd sit around, laughing about how badly we'd beaten on each other.

Looking back, I'd have to say we were all stoned out of our minds on endorphines. Arnold Schwarzenegger once said, "It's better than coming". I'm not sure I'd go that far, but it's still great. It lasts a lot longer, too. I'd usually hurt for several days afterwards, and with every ache there would be a little shot of endorphines. I get a rush just remembering the pain.

Soccer is for pussies. Get the kid on a lacrosse team. The BC will think it's a posh, upper-class sport with no hitting (which it most definitely is NOT), but Quinton will get some great contact work in a sport that should be, to my way of thinking, the Great American Sport.

Posted by: rivlax on September 24, 2003 10:42 AM

Didn't American Indians invent lacrosse?

Posted by: Acidman on September 24, 2003 04:36 PM

American and Canadian Indians, as the tribal boundaries crossed our current borders.

Posted by: MommaBear on September 24, 2003 04:43 PM

Jim Brown was both an All-American fullback at football and and All-American (whatever) at lacrosse at Syracuse.
