this is wrong

I don't give a damn how good a politician has been to people in eastern kentucky. You don't take Daniel Boone's name off a highway and rename it for the politician.

Yeah, the politician may have imported a lot of taxpayer dollars from the coffers of Washington and brought home the bacon, but he didn't settle the wilderness. Boone did.

Bejus. Just look at our new "heroes."

I know you have scare quotes around "heroes", but it is still so removed from reality, I have to post this redundant comment:

These are not HEROES. These are political brokers (read: money-gainers) who have learned how to gimp (this is not a real word, but I'm sure you ALL know what I mean) the beauracratic system to garner some free PR in the form of official signage to boost their re-election potential.

The sad reality is that, this is what passes for criteria for name recognition, as opposed to what was required of our forebearers.

In Kansas, a certain stretch of highway has been named for Dal...Dalyrymple...Hal Dal...
Hell, I don't remember, and I don't know WHO THE FUCK HE IS. But I'm pretty sure it translates as: The Asswipe who Fucked The Taxpayers First, Thus Garnering a Name Sign, Until A Bigger Asswipe/Fucker Comes Along.

Fitting, after all, won't you agree?

Georgia has more than its share of these vanity namings, but at least it doesn't look like they chuck the names of genuinely worthwhile people in favor of recent or current political hacks.

No, here the practice is simply to add names. U.S. 29 between Newnan and Atlanta is both the Roosevelt Highway and the Jefferson Davis Highway. I can imagine a day when they say to heck with it and start telling us who a certain stretch of highway isn't named for.

Here in Augusta we have a street downtown that has three names. They didn't drop any, they just added, so there are three signs for the street: Campbell Street
9th Street
James Brown Blvd.

Getting directions for that street can get a bit fuzzy, depending on what generation you are talking to.
