Roger Miller

Originally published June 2, 2004

I picked up a guitar this afternoon and surprised myself by the number of really good Roger Miller songs I remember. Yeah, everybody knows "King of the Road" and "Can't Roller-Skate in a Buffalo Herd," but how about "Chug-a-Lug," "Kansas City Star" and "Dang Me?" Those are damned good songs. I sang 'em all today and I enjoyed the hell out of myself.

I even did "England Swings."

Roger Miller was an excellent songwriter and one of the best white-boy scat-singers of all time. (for those who don't know, singing "scat" is subsituting SOUNDS for words in the middle of a song. Just listen to Roger and you'll know what I mean. "Bweep-bweep-bweep-bweep-da-da-diddly-da dooo...")

He was one of a kind and he died far too young.

Has anyone made progress in assembling a CD's worth of Rob's singing and playing? I downloaded a couple of songs after his passing, but didn't see any more posted anywhere.

Last I heard, Dave's working on getting all the songs copywrited... written?... well, you know what I mean.
*smile*

That could take some time, from what I understand.

Maybe if Willie or Cat pop in over here, they'll know more...

Lookin' forward to it, myself...
(Both, Rob's CD, and hearin' from those guys...)

I have three CD's worth of stuff now. Nothing that can be released until I get the OK from Dave. I also have many hours of parties that were recorded here at my house that I have yet to go through. I'm sure there are plenty of songs on those tapes that Rob was on. I'm trying to get some of my own stuff recorded now. I have a new 24 track digital recorder and some of the old stuff may be inproved if it is processed though this new system. I need to get familiar with this new recorder first.

By the way, I read in a biography of Jimmy Dean,(man of sausage and Big Bad John fame) that old Roger Miller stayed so high that he could go duck hunting with a rake.

*lmao*

Oh, I love Roger Miller stories.
Both about and told by him.

Didja ever hear about him, Marty Stuart, and the "Waylon wall"?
Or, the lady who came into the gas station he worked at back in Erick, OK., and the "whisk broom/use the air hose and blow it out" thing he said?

I've loved Roger Miller my whole life.
Learned of him from my Grandpop...
