June 14, 2006grasshoppahI found this colorful critter in my garden today. The picture didn't come out as good as I wanted, but I was having to hold grasshoppah by one of its legs to keep it from getting away while I pulled a one-handed shot with my camera. That sucker was PRETTY! Big and black, with day-glow red stripes on the body. It was about 3" long, end to end, which maybe you can tell by comparing the bug to my hand. I just wish the picture had been a little better-focused. But I did the best I could under the circumstances. After I took this picture, I turned it loose, in my front yard instead of in my garden. For all I know, the bastid has some locust heritage and he might like to eat the stuff I grow. But I didn't kill it. I kinda like grasshoppahs. Comments
We used to catch grasshoppers, my brother and I, but we never caught one that looked like that. Must be of the "southron" variety only...:) Posted by: Lisa W. on June 14, 2006 08:02 PMThat looks like a lubber grasshopper. When they get big, they're yellow and orange. And way ugly. Try googling on 'lubber grasshopper' in the images mode. Posted by: Ernie G on June 14, 2006 08:31 PMI looooooove grasshoppas! Used to see that particular critter on my maw-maw and paw-paws farm all the time though, and they WILL eat your veggies! Posted by: LilToni on June 14, 2006 09:05 PM... it looks like it should have a Bulldog logo on it... Posted by: Eric on June 14, 2006 09:43 PMImpressive! LOL Posted by: PattiG on June 15, 2006 12:04 AMI never knew grass hoppers came in any color except green. Patti G--- what server are you using? I've learned from several other readers that a few of 'em block my pictures for some stupid anti-virus reason. (It CAN be disabled, if you know how to do it.) If you're not using Internet Explorer, ask Chablis, LL, Paul or one of the other gurus on my blogroll how to fix what you've got.
