a quote from collagen-lips herself
Angelina Jolie may be a beautiful woman and a fine actress, but she's still a dingbat. Why is it that celebrities always sound smarter when they read lines from a script somebody else wrote?
"Africa is beautiful, marvellous, smart people, strong people, strong country and has a potential to be so much," Jolie said. "I'd love to see Africa flourish. ... It's magnificent and it has so much hope, so much possibility."
Yeah, Africa has a lot of potential. But it will continue to be a sump because of tribal rivalries, corrupt government, and a basic lack of civilization. As long as people such as Robert Mugabe hold sway there, there's no hope for the place.
A friend of mine once spent a year in Nigeria, working for one of the Big Three oil companies. Nigeria has a lot of oil. While he was in Lagos, the Supreme Commander of All decided to show off his military might by firing a lot of guns, straight up into the air, and he blew up half of Lagos and killed a lot of people when the shells came down.
I forget the asshole's name, but THAT'S the kind of leaders Africa has.
Africa is blessed with almost every natural resource known to man and those exist in abundance. But it doesn't have a lot of navigable waterways and its infrastructure is almost nil, so they can't take advantage of what they have.
But most of their problems remain political. 20 years ago, South Africa and Rhodesia were prosperous countries. Look at them now. Sumps.
Until Africa learns to govern itself with responsible leaders, it will remain just what it is now--- an AIDS-infested cesspool of corruption and vice.
The "potential" is there. But the leadership isn't.
Uhm, Angelina, Africa is NOT a COUNTRY.
Ummm, you make it sound like Nawlins.
You might as well quote directly from NatGeo.
Birthplace of civilization, Africa.
I'd comment on the heredity of the people running the places (like Mugabe) but I won't.
Don't want to offend the PC types. Suffice to say, look at DC. It's been fucked up since Walter Washington.
That's when Congress turned it over to the natives.
It's not just a question of leadership, it's one of culture, period.
As long as they don't get rid of the tribal model, they're not going anywhere. The tribe is well suited to a stone age civilization, where everyone has to help out to survive and a strong leader is an asset. The moment you add modern technology and commerce, however, the system breaks down. As soon as one tribesman strikes rich, every kin expects a free piece of the action (with serious social repercussions if you don't comply). Where's the incentive to perform if you get buried in moochers? That's no way to run a society.
The best thing that could happen to the Third World countries would be to lose their cultures.
Glad you highlighted South Africa. Once a growing progressive country, until the Ga. boy and his idiots decided that a mass murderer should be released from prison and made the ruler and property taken from the very ones that made it a growing progressive country. That's the joy of getting old, you can remember the screw ups like Dimmy Carter and what they really did. No rewritten history books needed. I'm (and those who lost their property rights) happy to see the country sink into the sewer.
In my business, I hang around people like her all the time. Can't get away from 'em. I can count on one hand the entertainers I know who share my opinion of, say, Jessie Jackson or the war.
Most of 'em are nice enough, but dumb as stumps. "Practical" dumb, not "book larnin'" dumb. The phrase "educated far beyond their natural intelligence level" applies to these people. Most are easy to debate....don't know what hit 'em! Then there are the "screamers!". I'll bet Streisand is one of 'em. Don't even try to debate one of these marsupials. It's absoufuckingloutly useless.
Shut up, sweetheart, and take off your top.
Jolie - it ain't French for "brains".
Go to The Nation Of Riflemen and read Kim DT's essay "Let Africa Sink." He grew up in South Africa and agrees with you completely, Rob.
I'd love the fuck the stupid out of her.
... and I don't see what's "dingbat" about what she said.
Africa does have potential, right, at the level she's saying, right? Rob seems to agree.
She says she wants Africa to flourish, not that it magically will.
Seems to me she's not being stupid or dingbattish here (as "strong country" is arguably probably a transcription or pronunciation error for "strong countriES", or takes "country" in the sense of "nice country 'round here, isn't it?", not "nation").
Maybe she is a stupid dingbat for other reasons, but I don't see anything here telling me she is.
Fine actress? She's just a scary person who plays scary peeople. But what a body
