quote of the day
Shamelessly stolen from here.
Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion, and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish." -- Author Unknown
Sorry if I offend any religious people, but I believe that you just read a really good quote. I don't believe in God, but if I did, I would expect him to put fish in the sea for ME to catch, clean and cook. I WOULD NOT expect fish to jump out of the ocean fully-cooked and onto my plate just because I prayed for that to happen.
If God existed, he would be a busy man--- CEO of the universe. He doesn't have time to answer every
prayer junk email he receives. Give the all-powerful, omnipotent one a break. Stop pestering him with your petty problems, get offa your ass and DO SOMETHING on your own.
Catch your own goddam fish. You don't really need God to help you with that task.
That's nice, Rob. But not every atheist has your moral clarity (not that every believer does either - but at least religion attempts to impart it, and many atheists tend to be actively hostile to the concept.)
Amen! Truer words are too rarely spoken.
God helps those who help themselves. Prayer without action will lead you nowhere.
Who was it had the t-shirt - "Jesus is coming...look busy!"
I do believe in God. That being said I do believe you are right. God gave us the means to do for ourselves.
We had gotten my father in law a bumper sticker that says "Jesus loves you, every one else thinks you're an asshole".
Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life,
a simple, lesson. And if one can not understand that lesson in life, maybe Rob should reach out and ask his brother to feed him, I would, as I know he would. Rob is the angry man, he thinks he is the only one who has lost a loved one. God loves you,Rob. Even if you don't believe.
Knowledge, volition, and action, with or without prayer.
And, someday, we will rewrite our definitions of GOD. The ones today are antiquated.
My mother has been confined to a wheelchair for 28 years due to her MS. She is the most religious person I know. She has read her bible, prayed, gone to church as much as her health will allow her. As a child I prayed every night for my mother to get out of that chair and walk in an act of futility. If god exists he is one mean motherfucker! No person would wish that on one of it's daughters, so why did god create my mother with that disease? But then again he is all knowing.
Oh yeah he works in mysterious ways too.
God gave us free will and if you don't have the will to fish feel free to starve.
Yup. And while praying for that fish, they will act all pious and righteous right in your face.
I just put more mustard on my corn-dog and ignore them.
"In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you brothers to keep away from every brother who is idle (shun) and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves A MODEL FOR YOU TO FOLLOW. for even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "HE WHO WILL NOT WORK, LET HIM NOT EAT." 2 Thessalonians 3:6-10
Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day;
Teach a man how to fish and he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
There's a fine line between fishing and standing on a riverbank looking like an idiot.
Excellent quote! Excellent advice!!!
I like this one: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; Teach him to use the Internet, and he won't bother you for weeks....
I've always preferred: "Build a man a fire and he'll be warm for the night. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life".
Jason, you have found a home!
God is NOT a micro-manager !!
The helping hand that you are searching for is at the end of your arm! (to quote an Atlanta preacher I heard one Sunday morning) Great post.
