give it to mikey

I ended up being the "mikey" of the gang of friends I ran with from about the age of twelve until we went our separate ways between there and high school. Remember "Mikey" from the cereal commercial, with two other boys sitting there and neither one of THEM wanted to taste the new cereal? So they fed it to Mikey? And he ATE it?

If you don't remember that commercial, you should be dragged off and shot, or at least fed something that you really don't like to eat. You have no sense of humor or a very short memory.

I was the "Mikey" in my group, who would try a bite of ANYTHING first. I'm not talking about eating dogshit, scarfing dead bugs or any of that kind of sick crap--- I'm talking about seeing something that was supposed to be food that you never saw before, you never smelled before and you didn't know what the hell it was, and you still took a bite of THAT. I did, many times.

Once I took a bite and didn't keel over dead, my friends would dig in, too, and we ate like back-hoes. They all learned to eat a lot of exotic food like that, the same way I did. TRY IT. You just might like it. And if it doesn't kill you, it was good.

That lesson never wore off today. I'll still try anything once.

I don't like squash. I tried it once when I was a youngun....I never had it since.

Just about anything else is fair game!

Spending my formative years in suburbia, the only meats I knew were the usual suspects such as beef, port, chicken, and lamb. Also venison but that's not considered exotic.

When I finally cut loose and moved back for the second time to Vermont about 14 years ago, I decided to expand my palate and started going to the yearly wild-game feasts in Bradford each year. I've discovered A LOT of remarkably tasty food in doing so, having now eaten bear, goat, rabbit, ground-hog, squirrel, and a host of others. Granted, the festival contributors spice the hell out of them but I find I enjoy them very much. Goat, especially, is a favorite of mine. (Sorry.)

It's still tough to get me near green-stuff like vegetables, though... I'm basically a carnivore, gout be-damned!

Sound like you had better start doing Mikey again since you have dropped in weight to middle school cheerleader size.

Sure, I remember that commercial, but I sometimes think I'm the only one who does, at least accurately. Yes, the two boys push the bowl of new cereal back and forth, saying, "I'm not gonna try it." Then one says, "Let's give to Mikey. He hates everything. [emphasis added] Then Mikey eats it, and they say, "Hey! He likes it! Hey, Mikey!!"

The entire point is that they expected that finicky little Mikey would NOT eat the strange new cereal, and were so shocked when he did that they were willing to try it themselves. But everybody seems to remember Mikey as The Kid Who Would Eat Anything. Sorry, it was the other way around.

I LOVE okra...IF it's fried. I tried it boiled once and came to the conclusion that it was a lot like sucking up snot when you can't blow your nose!

so i'm confused here too. I remember the commercial as being 'give it to mikey, he'll eat anything' as well. but the life commercial that I can find is 'he hates everything' - the latter makes more sense, but if so many people remember the 'he'll eat anything' line, then maybe there was another commercial that came out? maybe a spoof?
