Gut Rumbles

December 24, 2004

I gave the keys to my house to someone who volunteered to fix my spam problems. I just noticed a whole load of spam in my email. But when I started to blacklist them, I discovered that they had ALREADY been deleted, banned and run through the heart with a sharp stick.

Friend, if this fix works, I owe you a steak dinner and all the beer you want to drink. And I mean a BIG steak and ALL the beer. I appreciate a favor when someone does one for me.

I owe you, dude.

Just a test.

Looks like things are purring pretty well now, A-Man.

We're at DefCon 3 and nothing's getting through except real comments.

Hell, the Blacklist isn't even getting hammered anymore.

If any crap does slip through, please don't delete it. I need to monitor the results for a couple of days. I'll take care of deleting it after I've analysed it.

For comment spam, first go to Wordpress. I'm a former MT user & couldn't be happier (and it's a 5 minute installation job, as well) and there are blacklist options there, as well.

Second, get a plugin that closes comments after a period of time. Most robot spammers go after old posts.....I close mine after about 10 days or so. There's one for MT (IIRC) and I know there's one for WP.

For e-mail spam, set up cron jobs.
