Gut Rumbles

August 23, 2004

I just saw a commercial on television that I totally disagree with. It was from somebody humping a Ritalin-like drug for "Attention-Deficit, Hyperactive Disorder."

I call bullshit. When I went to school NOBODY had that disease, and I attended school with some really diseased fuckers. We were called LITTLE BOYS. We ran and jumped and played and fought and fell out of trees and set things on fire. We didn't LIKE being cooped up in school all day. We had wiggles in our legs.

I once worked with a guy named Mac (I won't use his last name, although I don't believe he would mind--- but I'm in enough trouble from this blog already.) and he had a son named Mac, too. Big Mac and Little Mac. One day, the school councillor called Big Mac and said that Little Mac had a behavioral problem and she believed that he should be put on Ritalin.

Big Mac exploded. He had quite a temper and he stomped off to the school to tell the authorities in change that there wasn't a got-dam thing wrong with his son. "You people want to punish him for doing exactly what I did at his age," Mac thundered. "You ain't gonna dope my boy to keep him from being a boy. Let him grow up, go to college and THEN do drugs, the same way I did."

Little Mac never got put on Ritalin.

I believe that a lot of what is called ADHD today is nothing more than a lack of discipline at home and boredom in school. My parents KNEW how to get MY attention. I had a hard-wire running right from my ass to my brain, and my parents weren't shy about ringing me up on that thing. If mama said, "Sit DOWN!" you sat down. If daddy said "BE QUIET AND STOP THAT!!" you shut up and stopped. If you didn't, they most certainly would make a direct wire-call from your ass to your brain.

I don't believe enough parents do that anymore.

Some of us DO, then have to deal with the fuckheads from children & family services afterwards.

Bastard fuckers.

And Deb knows what she speaks of! I am constantly checking that hard wired connection from butt to brain on our own version of "Larry, Moe, and Curly". Boy, have I got one for the USMC when he gets about 4 years older.

Anyhow you are right on in your comments. When dad raised his voice you listened. He NEVER had to raise it twice. And Grandma may have only been 5'2" but she had an old metal fly swatter...that Stung! Failing that, she had a willow tree...and WE had to go get a switch if the need arose....we didn't get grandma upset if we could help it.

I have to agree with you here.

We started my then 3 year old daughter at preschool and were told within a day that they thought she had adhd and should be taken for evaluation.

Why? Because she seemed to have difficulty sitting still and she liked to play by herself.

Now, okay, thanks for telling me your concerns....but, this teacher just kept at it and wanted to talk about ADHD everytime I went to pick by daughter up.

This was her first time having any real interaction with other kids -- up till then she spent her days with her grandmother. So, of course she didn't play with the other kids and she was a little energetic -- it was all new to her.

So I took her to her doctor who said...."um, you realize that she is only just turned 3. I wouldn't even think about discussing this with you until she is much older."

With this info I went to her preschool and said: "Don't bring this up again."

There are certainly a few kids out there who are clinically hyperactive, but that is probably 1-3% of the kids on these drugs....

Ritalin is pharmacologically similar to cocaine or meth. Adderall (another common treatment) IS METH!!!!!

It completely saturates the dopamine response, which leads to depressed behavior by desensitizing the circuit.

There are currently no good studies about Ritalin or Adderall and drug abuse in later life, but I ask you, how hypocritical is it to say that we need to push anti-drug education in the schools on one hand and allow our schools to act as pushers on the other???

And sadly enough, some parents let their 7-year old kids drink 4 or 5 cokes a day. Then they wonder why little Johnnie is bouncing off the walls. Cokes are full of sugar and caffeine, just what a 7-year old needs I tell you.

The way doctors and drug companies are pushing drugs on our children and the way parents allow their kids to consume copius quantities of sugar-filled snacks and cokes is a crime.

50% of the parents are totally worthless, don't believe me ? Get off your dead ass and go sub at a grade school. After I retired from the Army , I thought about going into education after doing a little substitute teaching I quickly changed my mind. Lousy principals, worthless parents and undiciplined kids are the norm. If you want to fix education then get off your dead ass and help the schools. Get rid of principals who don't believe in dicipline, throw worthless ass parents in jail. Who the fuck says you have to be a teacher to be a good prinicpal? Ya'll talk shit and throw darts, spend a day in a classroom and then speak your mind.

Great post, James Old Guy. You said a mothfull. Don't forget about those shitty teachers. Only about 3 out of 10, want to teach. They are only doing it for the paycheck.

Catfish, if they are doing it for the pay then they are really stupid, teachers get paid crap,

I have felt the same way as most of you guys most of my life. I'm a 29 yr old male. I was raised by a Father who spanked me. I spank my kids to enforce concepts words just can't do...mostly involving their safety (like running out into a street without looking) or blatent disobeydience.

Recently I discovered I have ADD. Until now I thought ADD was something "they" came up with to identify the symptoms of too much sugar/TV watching. Imagine the irony, I am one of those who has what I thought to be an imaginary disorder.

I've done my research, and I understand the ADD condition now. Not only do I understand what it is and is not, but I see how the lack of awareness of this disorder has caused me much grief in my childhood/teen years because of ignorance. When I was growing up, ADD wasn't talked about as it is today. So, I grew up being different and berated more than offered help and support.

Drugs are not the only solution, and I fear ADD is being overdiagnosed. I believe drugs should be a last resort when other things have failed and the condition is harming the individual from functioning as a student, worker, etc....not to a kis who annoyingly has to much energy for me to handle.

The leading Doctor in the field, Dr. Amen, has done research that has discovered ADDers have a lack of normal blood flow in the brain.

So much more can be said, but I'll leave it at that.
