he would lose in a landslide

I don't expect to see such a candidate in my lifetime, it but would be nice to hear a President say, "People, we can't aford any more spending. We've already overtaxed, nothing but IOUs exist in the Sccial Scecruty Trust Fund, so that leaves a simple decision. We've got to cut spending."

Voters would lynch him. They want their pie from the sky and they don't care how it gets here.

Bush's new budget will also estimate this year's budget deficit at about $520 billion, the congressional sources said. That would easily surpass the $375 billion shortfall of last year, the highest deficit ever in dollar terms.

Just Monday, the Congressional Budget Office projected this year's red ink would total $477 billion.

The new estimate comes as Bush braces for a difficult election-season fight with Congress over spending - after a budget year that he can hardly expect to top.

Although Bush sends his 2005 budget to Congress next week, lawmakers only last week completed their spending work for 2004. That process saw Bush win virtually all his major priorities including a tax cut, new Medicare prescription drug coverage, funds to fight a war with Iraq, and overall spending restraint.

Thank Bejus for all that spending restraint Bush has shown. The era of big government never ended and it never will. It's just going to grow like cancer, consume more of our money and steal our rights. Nobody is going to stop it or even slow it down.

Vested interests will see to that fact.

As usual, you are right. I'm trying to think my way out of your analysis -- trying to figure out a way increasing deficits and debt will paralyze the gov't., thus saving me and you from it. But so far the only answer I have is for me to turn to crime, following the lead of the gov't..

Thank Dog crime is illegal, so that the govt. cannot tax it, at least not legally. Even this "loophole" will probably be closed soon unless we bribe our "representatives" enough. What to do, what to do?

I don't think it's impossible to see a reduction in spending, just that it's very unlikely in the short term.

Keep in mind that Bush is spending like a sailor on shore leave at the moment as he's going into an election year. Thus far, he's managed to take damn near every Democrat issue away from them, steal their lunch money, and kick them in the ass to boot.

I'm expecting (and hoping) to see a lot more fisical responsibility come '05. And who knows, maybe in '08 we could see a small decrease in discretionary spending, if the right person gets into office.

Actually, the government does want to tax your ill-gotten gains. (Remember Al Capone?) The IRS wants its cut, it doesn't care how you got it, and if they find out you've got it, they will hit you for under-reporting your income.

No SHE wouldn't, not necessarily...give me a podium and watch me go.

It's the people's fault; we keep voting for the goodies.

What we get are middle class salaries for the college graduates whom the productive sector cannot absorb, about half of the total.

These degreed ones then make a career of excluding as many of the potential beneficiaries as possible from actually receiving the benefits they paid or voted for.

Thus, the all important salaries are maintained, and the poverty that justifies them perpetuated.

The people vote for this, and call it noble and good, not understanding that it violates our liberties to force one to support another.

If we no longer know what liberty is, I reckon it will be easy to take it away. It's almost deserved, but that perhaps 40% of us know better, and are always outvoted.

Politics as a profession is the problem, most congressmen get re-elected for bringing home the bacon, same with senators except for the few we could call statesmen that transcend local issues (McCain). Cox from California has a pretty good plan for fixing the budget since the Balanced Budget Amendment keeps getting killed in commitee.

My congressman Chabot R-OH is probably the only true fiscal conservative left from the Gingrich revolution, he can't be bribed with pork and has voted against the President quite a few times on budget issues. I agree with Mr. Lion that in 05 brings fiscal constraint, I really believe with re-election Bush will swing far to the right on national security and restore some sanity to our foreign policy. Syria-dead, Saudi-dead, Mullahs-overthrown, Nasrallah Yassin and Arafat-assasinated and the UN out of the US and the US out of the UN. That's for starters.....I believe Bush has the nads to do it too........Phil
