Gut Rumbles

January 24, 2004

Bob Keeshan died yesterday.

I grew up watching that show, and Grandfather Clock, Mr. Greens, Bunny Rabbit and Mr. Moose were important characters in my life. I loved that big ring of keys the Captain carried. I didn't know what he was captain OF, but I knew that he was an important man.

That man was an icon in children's television.

Who is going to Remember "Captain Planet" 40 years from now?

hmm. well, at least you're alive...

I grew up watching him, too. Quality is eternal, too bad there's so few following the example set by Bob Keeshan and Fred Rogers.

Much sadness...

Ray Rayner died as well. I missed those gys before, but damn, knowing they're gone forever, well, that's hard to grasp.

Mr. Greens?? You must mean Mr. Greenjeans.

Posted by: Full Auto on January 24, 2004 07:08 PM

Of course I did.

RIP Captain.

Thanks for the memories.

See you, and the moose, on the other side.

Tacky........ but timeless.

I'll remember him. Damn fine fella to grow up with.

I believe that Bob Keeshan was actually a captain in the military. It might have been some other branch of the armed services...

Or maybe it was some other distinction. I could be horribly wrong.

Funny, I'm only 21, and I grew up watching him, too.

Who is "Captain Planet ?" And I agree whole-heartedly with your comments on Mr. Keeshan. Maybe I haven't been reading the right news stories, but so far, none of them seem to mention that he also played the role of "Clarabelle" on "The Howdy Doody Show." Strange.

Posted by: Sandcrab on January 25, 2004 09:46 AM

He didn't play the role of Clarabell. He was Clarabell. Moreover Buffalo Bob in real life loathed him, which is what made the show. That and the crew being sex-crazed.

veryalda relisys....bob keeshan did serve in the military. according to he enlisted in the marines at the tail end of ww2 but never saw any combat. he was never a real captain.

Posted by: roger on January 25, 2004 02:12 PM

Sandcrab, Captain Planet was an animated show that was extremely 'environmentalist' in content. Good, but 'preachy'. Comparing the two 'Captains' is like comparing apples and oranges.
My kids loved Captain Kangaroo. We will miss him.

What's going on around here? Where's Rob and why is he acting weird? He's still not pissed about the cats is he? I've been out of town for 4 days and I"m a little confussed.

Posted by: Brandy on January 25, 2004 11:35 PM

Captain Planet? Never saw him, but I know who he was, and just what Rob means. He was host of an after-school TV show that attracted us kids for the 4:00 slot by playing up our enthusiasm for space age stuff, drawing us in to watch some cheesy studio bits with spaceships and spacesuits, the cartoons we really wanted to see, and of course the ads.

When I was growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, our local version was Captain Satellite. His set was a spaceship where he sat at the front at the controls, and all his little guests sat behind him. Every day, a birthday boy or girl would be his co-pilot, pulling the lever sending the ship up into the sky (camera tilts), up to the world of cartoons and fun.

I was never a birthday child, but I was on the show as a guest in the back. It was disillusioning, not just because I found that the set, which I had seen so many times, didn't really rear back up and head up into space. But what frustrated all us kids was that the grownups in the studio wouldn't let us watch the cartoons on the monitors. It seems that at just that moment there was this guy named John Glenn who was doing this silly thing about orbiting the Earth in a capsule, and the big folks wanted to see that instead.

John Glenn vs. cartoons? Hey, I was six years old, huh?

One season was located on the Treasure Boat rather than the Treasure House, and the Captain was captain. A large whale puppet whose name escapes me was a temporary character.

Thanks for noticing for Brandy.

Rob's mellowed out. Too much valium will do that to you.

He needs a doc for each end. If he had his foot properly cared for, as well as his heavy-weight baggage properly addressed, maybe he wouldn't need to self-medicate.

Stubborn bastard.

Key -- Say how you feel, don't hold anything back! LOL
Do any of you folks remember watching Land of the Lost when you were a kid? My sister and I used to watch that all the time. One of the monkeys on the show was named Chocka. Does anyone remember the other monkey's name?
