Gut Rumbles

November 28, 2003

I call myself a "redneck," but I really don't like that term, and to tell the truth, I don't qualify. I just call myself a redneck to piss off yankees, racists and the politically correct among us.

I KNOW what a Southern redneck is. He's a farmer who spent so much time in the fields plowing, planting and harvesting under a blistering summer sun that the back of his neck resembles a hand-sewn red quilt. The skin appears to be put together in sections with stitches in between. It's rough, wrinkled and red.

Genuine red-necks are hard-working, honest creatures of the land. They grow the food the "metrosexuals" eat every day. They know how to milk a cow and pick cotton and what "fair-to-middlin'" tobacco is. They are fine people. I live around a lot of them.

The term "red-neck" has been corrupted in its meaning and it has become an insult to all Southerners. The same people who call ME a red-neck would love to lynch me for using the word "nigger" on this blog (and in fact, they have).

I've often said that white, Southern, heterosexual men are the last minority in the country that political correctness does not protect. It's okay to call a Southern man a red-neck. In fact, you can get a lot of laughts out of your "intellectual" peers when you do it, as long as you carry a "Free Mumia" poster at the same time.

Kiss my Cracker ass.

I would rather live among a bunch of red-necks than live in Washington, DC, among a bunch of politicians and bureaucrats. Red-necks are a lot more honest. Red-necks tend to leave you alone if you ask them to.

Government never does.

(Still, this isn't a bad post.)

Once again, you have hit the nail on the head.
Great post!

Got to disagree. I have yet to live in a State that people didn't refer to country folk in general as Rednecks or Hicks.

Now since we're all being a bit sensitive about name calling, allow me to throw my two cents in.

Calling everyone up north a Yankee is an erroneous term, unless you simply want to divide it up by Civil War stances. The Northeast is huge. Comparing someone from Vermont to someone from New Jersey is like comparing someone from Alabama to California. Night and day.

What you all seem to forget is that there is more to the North than just New York City and New Jersey. Take the most beautiful stretch of our country for example. Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire. A bunch of loggers, farmers, and fisherman. All hard working people that know the fruit of their labor and how to work the land or sea.

WE are the real Yankees. Our name has been hijacked too. And I'll tell you what else - I'd be hard pressed to meet anyone on this blog that has more hours fishing, hunting, and exploring dirt roads and trails than me. Of course if you're twice my age, it doesn't count.

Ralphy, I'll take your challenge about the woods. I'm 51 and I've been running them since I was ten years old. I know what I'm doing out there.

Not many people that I know are any better.

Posted by: Acidman on November 28, 2003 08:52 AM

I expected that retort. Why do you think I used that blanket sentence at the end of the post? I'm not eating humble pie, when I say it's hard to beat a man with several more years experience than you. I'd be willing to bet though, I could teach you a few tricks about the North Woods.

Posted by: "Ralphy" on November 28, 2003 09:09 AM

Acidman, I respectfully disagree.

The term "redneck" HAS changed in meaning. Words do that. Society does that. Someone who BUYS "evolution" ought to be able to appreciate the fact that things/people/terms evolve over time. People change, therefore meanings change.

If YOU are a redneck, then define this character:

He lives in a thirty year old single wide trailer that is completely trashed out. He doesn't work; he collects disability because he has some "stiffness." But he has enough money to get a souped up truck, lower it, and remove the muffler. The rest of his vehicles are on blocks in the front yard. His language is plagued with slang, double negatives, double comparatives, dangling participles, the list goes on. But if you TOLD him that, he'd think that you were speaking another language. He's missing teeth, but going to the dentist is not a priority. He's never heard of spaying or neutering; pets take a bullet if they reproduce to the point of becoming bothersome. He has little respect for himself, less for his children, and even less for his wife.

In my opinion, THAT is redneck.

And you, Acidman, are a good 'ol country boy.

All the above notwithstanding, I live in Sodom-on-the-Potomac (well, way too many hours each week anyways), and I agree with you Acidman. I'd much rather be around decent, hard-working rednecks.

I dunno, Key. Sounds like what we in Florida call "trailer trash" or "po white trash".
Rednecks work for a livin' .

...yeah, that's what he said. I'll give it more thought, but I maintain that being "country" is by far preferable to being "redneck."
