wisdom

Somebody laid this quote on me the other day and I've been thinking about it ever since. "All a poor person has is his word. If he loses THAT, he ain't worth nothin'."

Think about it. What is YOUR word worth to YOU? Even better, what is your word worth to OTHER people?

Honesty is NOT the best policy. I've learned that fact by paying for mistakes I made by being honest. You've got a whole bunch of crooks out there who PREY on honest people. Fuck. Just look at the U.S. Congress. Those soul-less asswipes are everywhere, and you'd better watch out for them.

Still, I keep my word.

That's important to me. I pay my bets when I lose and I do what I say I'm going to do. If I shake your hand and say, "It's a deal," we've got a deal. I don't need a lawyer to hand me a stack of paperwork for signatures and notorization if YOUR word is as good as mine.

I know a lot of people who are just like me in that regard. I also know many others who would steal the gold out of a dead man's dentures and lie their asses off about doing it, even if caught red-handed. YOU know people on both sides of that equation.

Wisdom is being able to tell the difference.

Hey Rob,

Personally, I believe there is a difference between "honesty" and "your word".

I grew up with "live and die by your word."

I hope I die with it.

Good Luck tomorrow!

I’ve always been too honest. When a mildly dishonest ‘getting a beer’ would probably work when my wife asks where I spent the afternoon in New Orleans, I tend to say the truth and I say: ‘leering at mostly naked 19 year-olds at a strip joint in the French Quarter’. doh.

Christina is right. I keep my word. I'm honest if I can be. Otherwise I’ll keep my stupid pie-hole shut.

good luck tomorrow.

Sadly there HAVE been times when my word ain't meant shit...I've lied, I've backed out on dares & deals..so I guess I better not ever get to Poor than. :)

I'm in agreement. I wish I was completley honest, but I can see the line and I know what my word is worth. I need to look at myself in the mirror to shave, and so I really need to keep my word, I figure, or get better with a razor.

I've been having this same discussion with my 11 year old who lied last week to avoid doing his homework. Small infraction...BIG consequences, since now I can't believe a word that comes out of his mouth. A few weeks of being grounded and various lectures on never lying and having some fucking integrity are on his agenda for a while.

Yeah...I'm still wound up about it lol.

It's a shame how many of us actually reward dishonesty by punishing the honest.
