Gut Rumbles

burger booster

I think I've eaten a hamburger at Ruby Tuesday's, but I don't remember it being this good. Maybe I need to go back to Ruby's and try again.

Here are my selections for the best hamburgers in Savannah. As is typical in my life, two of the three places no longer are open for business.

#1-- The old Crystal Beer Parlor in downtown Savannah. Damn! The place is closed now, but they once served the best hamburger in the world as far as I'm concerned. With some steak fries and a pitcher of cold beer, that burger was exquisite.

#2-- The Exchange Tavern on River Street in Savannah. I think it's called "The Congress" on the menu. That's a delicious, two-fisted burger that leaves juice and fixins dripping off your elbows after a couple of bites. Ummmm.... GOOD!

#3-- Billy Bob's Steak House. Not the one on River Street, but the one that once operated off Mall Boulevard before the tax man ran them out of business. They served a 1/2 pound burger with everything, including chili on it, which was a true-gut-buster if you ate the whole thing. It would put you in a coma if you weren't careful.

Damn! Now I'm craving a hamburger. I won't defile my palate with anything I can find around where I live--- my choices are Burger King or MacDonald's--- so I'll just make my own, which would be #4 on that list if I still lived in Savannah.

I make a mean burger...

The Crystal Beer Parlor has re-opened and is as good as ever.

Obviously you have not had one of Moogie's famous burgers. This will have to be rectified. Once I've recovered, expect an invite for the great burger cookoff. We'll just see who takes the #4 spot.

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing as Willy. I think it's open Monday thru Friday for lunch and then in the evenings for dinner. Although, sometimes I wish they were open on Saturday's for lunch.

This is my mom's opinion, but I'll share it with you...she thinks that Ben's Neighborhood Grill on Hodgson Memorial makes THE BEST hamburger in Savannah. I'm not saying that I don't think it's good, but I'd rather go to the Exchange.

One more place you might try for a burger in Savannah is B & D Burgers on Broughton or Abercorn near Lowe's and Home Depot.

My Lab mix Sally wouldn't even clean up the sh_t left from me not even being able to finish a "King" or "Mac". And, she'll eat damn near ANYTHING coming from the Master's hand (that's me). Even lettuce. Or banana chunks.

The worst bar burger I ever ate was miles better than those franchise fuckups.

OK, one exception. I had a "burger" on plain white bread in Crown King, AZ (middle of NOWHERE), in the cook shack attached to the back of the bar. It was the worst I ever had. Their excuse was they only went "to town" for burger buns once a month, and had ran out.

OK, maybe it's the habit of downing a pitcher of whatever is good on tap before "the bar burger" arrives that helps my attitude and altitude "a bit".

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to steer clear of places with "tavern" or "beer" in their names.

Actually, I don't think it would do Acidman any harm to go to either of them...they are restaurants before they are bars anyway.

Now I have this yearning for a good burger.

Oh yeah. I just ATE a homemade burger(which was excellent) but up in my neck of the woods, you have 2 choices...the better burger is at the Rusty Hammer, but a very good burger is ALSO available at Gilly's, with a better blend of locals.

Ruby Tuesday's has been my casual "beer and munches" place of choice lately. Their smokehouse burger really is fantastic!

Remember Joe's Twin Park? It was on Victory Drive at West Board streets.

Their smokehouse burger really is fantastic!

I wanted to shout "Hallelujah!" when they added a smokehouse burger to their buffalo-meat selections. These days if I'm at Ruby Tuesday or Smokey Bones and want a burger, it's buffalo meat every time.

Wonderful -- and I've already had dinner!

You need to try Rhea's wherever you can find one. Talk about great price-$4.85 for a burger fries and regular soda. Burger on bread and completely loaded. Yum!
