time for a change

I want to change the old picture of the shirtless me on my sidebar and replace it with the picture posted here. The old picture was taken in August of 2002, on the balcony of a hotel at Daytona Beach during an afternoon thundershower. The picture above was taken last night.

As you can see, Father Time has kicked my ass during the past few years and I don't want to pretend to be someone I'm not on this blog. The only problem is, the new picture is 640 X 480 and it eats up a LOT of bandwidth. I don't know how to resize it to 85 X 118, which is what I need for the sidebar.

My patient and all-knowing shepherd of lost sheep sent me an email months ago telling me how to resize pictures, but this lost sheep misplaced the instructions, so I remain lost and bleating. Piteously. Hopelessly. Fucktardedly.

Can anybody tell me how to do what I want to do? If so, email me the instructions or put them in the comments, and I'll give it a shot. I'm going to delete this post after a couple of days, because it's going to be hell to load on dial-up connections. The picture is too damned BIG, even though I DO look like a handsome, though somewhat battered, rascal there. How do I shrink it and get it on the sidebar?

Anybody wanna help a computer idiot?

What program do you have for image manipulation?
Anyone of the PhotoShop variants can do re-sizing with incredible ease.

Watch your e-mail. Or I will comment here and give a location to grab it from.

But...

The existing one is 157x127, so I am going to assume that is the size you need. However, if I specifiy a new width of 157, to stay in proportion the height is 118. I assume that is okay, but things can be trimmed to make it match exactly.

Speaking of trimming, so much of the picture is not you, but your surroundings, you look tiny with it sized down. Would it maybe be better if it were cropped?

Ok, just send that pic over to me at my email addy, cythen@cox.net and I'll resize it and send it right back. I've got photoshop 7 and I'm not afraid to use it. ;) As for how do you get it on the sidebar, I imagine rename the file I'll send back the same as what you have for the sidebar (i.e. if the pic on the sidebar right now is rob.jpg then name the NEW pic rob.jpg and upload it, and it will over-write the old one), and it should work.

Just go to the Microsoft Power toys website:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Along the right hand side find, download, and install the Image Resizer tool. Once that is done just find the picture on your computer, right click the file, and select resize image. Once the image resizer opens up just select the advanced tab and type in your custome image size.

Open up the photo with your PAINT program....then go to IMAGE, then STRETCH/SKEW...Select STRETCH, and then try number less than 100 %......whatever number you try, enter it in both horizontal and vertical....

You should be able to tweak it down to whatever size you like that way.

Check your email. I've resized it for you. Let me know if it works.

Modified images linked at http://accidentalverbosity.com/index.php/weblog/editing_acidman/ if you'd like to use any of them. All are 14 - 16k in file size.

Rob, iIve resent the instructions I originally sent along for the basic image resizing, along with some options for getting the sidebar image replaced.

Check your email & let me know what you'd like to do.

The shit-eating grin, the twinkle of mischief in the eyes...THERE is the Acidman we all know and love.

The pic you have in the sidebar now is 157 x 127.

Why do you need the new pic to be smaller than that? Are you re-designing the site?

Great picture - can't wait to see it up on the sidebar. It's really you...

Posted by: Lisa on January 8, 2006 06:43 PM

I like the old photo.

I can see you your right hand slowly reaching for the .38 that you don't own as a cat creeps stealthily towards a tree full of baby birds.

You have that "target!" look in your eyes.

Nice photo but whoever said crop it a little was right. Take out the guitar so you get a tighter head shot.

Posted by: Libby on January 8, 2006 10:21 PM

While it may be where you are the majority of the time, (according to a recent houseguest), I really don't want to see you in front of the computer.

Heck, I don't won't to see you at all... but if you must have a picture up, make it one playing that guitar.

And don't be afraid to change it in a few months when you have put on some more weight. 80+ days has changed your freaking life... AWESOME!

I can't help you with the photo problem, but Father Time hasn't kicked your ass that hard, you look good in the new photo, too!
I just love reading your blog...don't always agree, but I always have a good time! : )

i gotta say u look better in the new pic. Age looks good on some people.

Posted by: Celt on January 9, 2006 12:13 PM

The old picture looks like someone I would avoid in a bar, or on the street.

The new one looks like someone I'd enjoy a conversation with.

But then I've read your blog fro over a year. I know they are both you. :)
