pure bullshit

Go read this for a nice toxic dose of what is wrong with the environmentalist movement today. Scientists are measuring "pollutants" in human subjects and actually FINDING THEM. Ohmygod! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!

Nowhere in the article does it state that we're being poisoned, but it damn sure insinuates that position. Just WTF does this crap really mean?

- In March, California researchers reported that San Francisco-area women have three to 10 times as much chemical flame retardant in their breast tissue as European or Japanese women.

- Indiana University researchers reported at the same time that levels in Indiana and California women and infants were 20 times higher than those in Sweden and Norway, which recently banned flame retardant.

- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this year released data from 2,500 volunteers tested for 116 pollutants and found such chemicals as mercury, uranium and cotinine, a chemical broken down from nicotine.

Upon what scale are we measuring these results? Parts per billion? I expect that to be the case, and I want people to stop and think for a minute. Until recently, we couldn't even DETECT such minute quantites. Now, we have very sophisticated instruments that CAN detect such minute quantities and "scientists" and dumbfuck environmentalists are using the results to scare the shit out of people who should know better.

1,000,000,000.

That's a billion.

000,000,000,001.

That's one part per billion.

000,000,000,003.

That's THREE TIMES as high as one part per billion! OHMYGOD! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!

What pure, unmitigated bullshit these "studies" are. It's not the poison that kills you, people; it's the dose. I am not surprised that these asswipes can detect "pollutants" in anybody they analyze today. We have some really sensitive instruments to do the measuring. But when we're really talking about a drip from an eye-dropper in a 20,000-gallon swimming, pool, I have a difficult time becoming upset and fearing for my life.

You should, too.

hehe. A-man, i think you'll thoroughly enjoy this link to the transcription of a talk given by Michael Crichton at Caltech, "aliens cause global warming".

In the San Francisco area, particularly Marin county, women have a much higher occurance of breast cancer than woman in other places. So I think this study might be useful....even if they are talking about parts per billion. If they are really finding that these women have higher amouts of some chemical in their breast tissue....AND they have higher rates of breast cancer.....then maybe we have learned something.
It may be a microscopic amount......but if it means the difference between getting breast cancer or not......I think even you'll agree that the study was worthwhile.

Posted by: DogsDon'tPurr on December 26, 2003 01:35 PM

The study might be 'worthwhile' but that doesn't mean that it has found any causation.

Let 'em ban flame retarded chemicals, then when people start dying of flamable PJ's and bedding we can sue the brainics that banned it, and get on to worrying about more important shit, like pesticides.

Y'all miss the salient point of the study, completely.

The way I read it, being a Flaming Retarded Liberal sucking on the Government Teat is the cause of their ailments.

Frankly, I think one liberal per million taxpayers is a far worse plauge than a three-per-billion possible pollutant linkage.

Liberalism: It's what Ails ya.

"California" and "San Francisco-area" are mentioned. That should more or less illustrate that what follows contains absolutely no rational thought.

I want the entire list GotDampit!
The level of lighter fluid in the labia
the level of cotton candy in the glutimus maximus
The fat globuoles in the prefrontal cortex
the gram wieght of red polish on the toe nails
the voltaic charge at the finger tips
the aromatic olifins in the lip gloss
the magnitude and depth of the baby blues
the magnetic attraction as a fraction of the action
Then, and only then, would we be ready to ask
IS SHE WILLING?

Re the incidence of breast cancer in Marin County, California women: What was the incidence of lactation/pregnancy numbers in the Marin County women versus women in counties with lower breast cancer rates? What was the incidence of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in same women? How many took birth control pills at the higher hormonal doses when they first came on the market? Some other interesting questions would be what is the median age in the Marin County women versus other non-breast cancer counties? Are these women native to Marin county and, if not, how long did they reside there and where did they move from?

I think that those issues would be the best starting place.

You got that right, SwampWoman.

WHO KNEW silicone was a flame retardant? I didn't. I want one o' them California wimmen next to me in a fire and she can whup that baby out.

I'm not sure that havin' flame retardant breasts is a bad thang. Maybe I SHOULD go see a plastic surgeon. "Okay, I want them flame retardant, k? And can you make them as sort of emergency flotation devices? I never really learned to swim as a kid because Jaws came out then, and I could use the extra help floating. " I thought about having the cellulite sucked out and replaced with styrofoam beads, but I kinda wanted my HEAD above water.

To quote from that article: "testing will help researchers learn what role the environment plays in causing disease and how to treat it."

I am amazed that you guys are so negative about this. Do you want to live in the dark ages.....or do you want to live in a society that is researching how to treat and cure diseases?! The environment may play a small role in this, microscopically small maybe........but we won't know for sure unless the research is done. Would you rather not know what causes your cancer? That's just plain ignorant.
Maybe with this kind of research they might find out that these things don't cause cancer, but are in fact beneficial......wouldn't you want to know that too?
And if all you people would just stop standing so close to the fire, and stop dropping cigarrettes and matches on yourselves, and watch your children a little closer.......and in general just be more careful.......WE WOULDN'T NEED FLAME RETARDANT!!

Ok......I'm done now.

Actually the cause of the rise in Cancer is too damned simple for all those smart people.
The cancer rate rose when Salk defeated Polio and Walter Reed beat Yellowjack. When was the last time we saw somebody in America die of Lockjaw or Diptheria?
People get Cancer because they live long enough to get it. They live long enough to get it because we've defeated so many of the things that people died young from. Since nobody gets out of life alive everyone that would have died from infections from minor cuts have to die of something else. That's the rules. Everybody dies.

Posted by: Peter on December 27, 2003 01:07 AM

To reply to Peter......we wouldn't have a cure / vaccination for things like polio, lockjaw, diptheria, etc,.....if it wasn't for research. If you'd ever know someone who had cancer......you'd want every bit of research being done, no matter how silly it seemed, if would prevent any of their suffering.

How does "flame retardant" know which breast on any particular woman to attack so as to make the incidence "fair" vis a vis left and right breasts, also showing mercy upon the woman by not attacking both at the same time? More work of the evil Aliens, as always maliciously capricious in their ways! Having made Uranium ubiquitous in the environment, to no avail except -- obviously -- to increase life spans, they now seek an increase in the burning of babies as retribution. Where's Dog when we need Him?

Posted by: Ga-ne-sha on December 27, 2003 08:16 AM

Oh wait, the breast "tissue" studied by the vacuum-brained was in fact breast milk, heretofore the vehicle for accomplishing the laudable goal of producing flame-retardant babies, and improving the self esteem of the long suffering race of women by making lactating breasts qualified fire extinguishers, thus even more handy than they already are.

Apparently, though, when the Haliburton Morturary Division discovered it could not cremate such babies and breasts -- as well as some Youts -- it caused Sweden and Norway to ban flame retardants, in an attempt to manipulate Liberals here into thinking flame retardant is "bad", since we must do what Socialism does, because Socialists all do the same thing, whatever it is.

But meanwhile Bush and Cheney laugh all the way along their journey toward World Domination, dancing in joyous concert with the Aliens.

Now, it follows that only Howard Dean can save us, my friends, as he alone among the otherwise dwarf Socialists recognizes that the key to defeating Haliburton is to establish league with Terrorists, since they are the only Socialists with any balls, self-inflated though they are, including Dean. [As all Socialists say regarding any topic, the flame retardant issue is "complicated".]

Dogsdont--

Disinterested research is desirable. Research undertaken for the purpose of promoting certain legislation is a corruption of both science and law. That's what we're bitchin' about

Acidman,

I'm a great fan, and agree with your position on ecological, environmental, and climatological issues, but I must disagree with your math. A billion is a 1 followed by nine zeros, not twelve (that is a trillion). That throws off all your values by three orders of magnitude.

In spite of that, your point is still valid.

Thanks for writing for us!

I'm not surprised that California has the highest incidence of flame retardant chemicals in women's breast tissue. Californina has the strictest requirements for flame retardant treated textiles in the U.S. If you mandate that the flame retardants be present, it shouldn't be terribly surprising that they show up somewhere.
