October 18, 2003simile, metaphor and allegoryJust for those who wonder, I know that a simile uses "like" or "as" in its construction. "Quiet as a mouse." is a simile. A metaphor, on the other hand, is more of an analogy, where you describe one thing to create the image of something else. "The fog came on little cat feet" is a metaphor. See? Fog creeps like a cat and... well, if you don't get it by now, you ain't GONNA get it. An allegory is totally different. An allegory tells one story while symbolizing another. I know the difference between simile, metaphor and allegory. Like a cat, I tend to land on my feet no matter what happens to me. I wrap myself in conflict because I enjoy the cold comfort I feel in an unwarmed blanket. Once upon a time, a man was brought before the tribal Witch Doctor and asked to make a choice. "You can kiss my feet and accept Gudonga as the One True God, or my minions will whack your head off right now!" The man spit on the witch doctor and lost his head because he wasn't willing to quit his own beliefs. There you have them. Simile, metaphor and allegory, back-to-back. I know the difference.

I thought the proper use of as in a simile was in a comparison: as tall as a skyscraper, and its like companion, like a skyscraper.
Of course, I could be mistaken. I am going on some incomplete information from Fowlers and College English 8th Ed. and several cups of coffee. A metaphor generally includes some kind of verb form implying action of similarity, as opposed to a direct a-->b construct using like or as.
