October 07, 2003My cold, dead fingersI saw the results of a gun buy-back program that was conducted somewhere once by some well-meaning but misguided organization in my vicinity. I want to say that it happened in Savannah, but I might have been in Florida at the time. I am not sure because I didn't turn in any of my guns for a $50 gift certificate and I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the misguided affair. The guns I saw on the news, as the organizers of the buy-back proudly displayed them, resembled shit that somebody found when they had their septic tank drained. Rusty, cheap, no-good, worth-less-than-$50 pieces of JUNK were what these idiotic zealots bought. The damn things wouldn't fire if you poured lighter fluid all over them. But they are saving the nation from guns, don't you know. Here is the minset that engages in such bufoonery: "A gun is like a rattlesnake. You can try to keep it in a cage, but sooner or later it's going to get out and hurt someone." That woman is exactly right. If I don't check the locks on my gun-cages every single day, one of my guns is bound to get loose and go bouncing around the house shooting all by itself until it runs out of ammo. Then, if I don't catch and re-cage that crafty sumbitch right away, it'll reload itself and go bouncing through the house some more. It's like a rattlesnake that way. My aching ass.
