long winded

Bejus! this guy makes this guy seem phlegmatic.

I can take all 10,000 words written on that post and sum them up in a nutshell, because I learned the same lesson on school playgrounds and at work a long time ago. Here goes:

Somebody is ALWAYS going to be in charge. You need power to be in charge. You'll need to not only demonstrate your power but also YOUR WILLINGNESS TO USE IT before people accept the fact that YOU are in charge. If the powerful one simply enjoys exercising his power, he is a bully, and people are terrified of him. If the powerful one declares a "No Fighting" rule, and leaves people alone, people envy him. Either way, the one in power will NEVER be loved by all.

That's the curse that comes with power. You've got to accept the fact that people will dislike you simply because you are strong. If you want to be loved, you have a simple choice. Stop being strong. Otherwise, forget about being loved.

That's what power is about. Do you want to be Tall Dog, or do you want the world to pet you?

Great synopsis. I still haven't finished Whittle's opus. Not enough hours in the day.

Bill Whittle's essays go far beyond mere communication. I find his writing enjoyable, in and of itself, beyond whatever message is conveyed by the words. Actually I often feel the same about Steven Den Beste.

I started Bill's essay too, Juliette. Couldn't do it in one try, with all the interruptions. Think I'll print it out and read it in bed! NK.

Ah, but Whittle is a joy to read. Den Beste is often like reading a textbook. Den Beste is educational, Whittle is inspiring.

I like 'em both.

But I've been known to be pretty verbose sometimes myself.
