September 18, 2003the instalancheIf the tall dog links you, he'll sure enough spin your hit counter wilder than you ever thought possible. But the blogosphere is the ultimate short attention-span theater, and your glory vanishes in a day. wizbang has some advice about how to court the Master, but I've never followed that advice, and I never will. I just write a blog. I don't shop posts to anyone and beg for a link. I read a lot of blogs, but I don't leave many comments. I lurk. I seldom email ANYONE, and I do it then ONLY if I am really impressed by something the blogger said. I don't do it to grub a link. I write what I feel like writing and I don't tailor it for any particular audience. This blog has been my boiler, and I lift the PRVs every now and then, just to see if they'll seat when the pressure goes down. I've said it before and I'll say it again. This blog saved my life. You want some really good advice about blogging? Take it from the master. The vaunted "Instalanche" looks impressive on your counter for a day, but most of those readers won't stick around. Readers you build on your own will. Yes, Glenn has linked me a few times and I am very grateful for his attention. But, how many of you people who read me often came from an Instalanche? Not many, I presume. I really believe that I have the readership that I do because I pound out a lot of stuff every day. I am consistent. I throw a lot of posts at the wall and some of them stick. Some don't, but that's the chance you take when you blog the way I do. I just want to write. I don't give a shit about blog politics. Comments
Got an Instalanche going on at my place as I write this, due to the hurricane blogging I've been doing today. The traffic will last until the link scrolls off the Tall Dog's page, and then I'll be back to my normal 100+ readers per day. Doesn't bother me a bit either way. Considering how infrequently I've been blogging for the past three months, 100+ readers is just as exciting as an Instalanche. Posted by: Tobacco Road Fogey on September 18, 2003 06:54 PMI don't remember how the hell I got here and found you. I read few blogs on a regular basis and, like you, could give two shits less about blog popularity and links. I write when and what I want and don't much worry about how many people read my stuff. I originally started my blog to keep family updated on the goings on in my life, since I'm such a shitty letter writer. But they think it's wrong for me to air the dirty laundry for the world to see, so even they rarely visit anymore. I wish I could find a 'focus' for my blog and maybe someday I will, but for now, I'm happy just puttering around. My only Instalanches come when I piss off the trolls here ;-) Posted by: Chablis on September 18, 2003 07:13 PMActually, I discovered "Gut Rumbles" through an instalanche, and I've hung around for a while because I enjoyed what I've read. Acidman carries on a fine tradition of Southern literature that I'm not sure those from other parts of the world really, truly understand. By the way, my blog has never had an instalanche, but it did get "gut rumbled", which did give my blog a 200+ visit spike. Posted by: Jack on September 18, 2003 07:20 PMJack, that's called an "Acidbath" when I send visitors your way. Posted by: Acidman on September 18, 2003 07:36 PMWhen I first started I really wanted to be "loved" now I don't give a shit one way or another. It's like you either want to throw a party for a lot of people who are mainly there for the food and drink, or you can give a small intimate party for a few who really are interested in what you have to say. I would rather have the latter. And yes, A-Man did bump me and yes it was a thrill, kind of like a one night stand that lasted a whole weekend. When the sex is over you don't know him and he doesn't know you and you would just soon keep it that way. A big wonderful, but cheap and sleazy thrill! Posted by: Laura on September 18, 2003 08:12 PMAcidbath, eh? I've been calling them Acidlanches! I don't remember exactly, but I may have found you initially via a permalink from Instapundit. But I found Instapundit via, if I remember right, Virginia Postrel, whom I'd known of since the 80's when she became Reason's editor. I think I found her blog because we were on the same mailing list, and in a post she had a link to her blog. The mailing list was originated by a guy I met through volunteering for the Arisia SF convention, for a project started by SF authors Brin, Bear and Benford. The project was so much like something I'd thought up years before, I was interested in seeing what happened with it. I first heard of Arisia from one of my two best friends, who was one of the five founders of Arisia. I first met him in 9th grade, 28 years ago. So you could say that meeting my friend 28 years ago was the flapping butterfly wings that led me to read your blog. Posted by: Jay Solo on September 18, 2003 08:23 PMI don't "bump" anybody. I link and let people follow. You are on your own after that. Posted by: Acidman on September 18, 2003 08:23 PMMy god!!! I had no idea that people actually send Glenn emails trying to get him to link to their blogs. Maybe what they should be doing is writing original, interesting content instead. This sounds like junior high school all over again. Posted by: sugarmama on September 18, 2003 09:06 PMGlenn is busy. A lot of what he posts is tips from others that he receives in e-mail. I periodically send him stuff he might be interested in, that I have seen on other blogs he might not notice. He's used one of the several I've submitted. I've also drawn attention to mine a couple times, but my one Instalanche was something he decided to link to on his own. It's not wrong, but it shouldn't be overdone. As for original, interesting content, well, yeah. And IF other people know it's there, they are more likely to link to it. Posted by: Jay Solo on September 18, 2003 09:13 PMA New Zealand blogger referred me to Acidman's blog... heh...WTF are grits? ;-) Posted by: Ruth on September 18, 2003 09:35 PMI read Gut Rumbles every day. There's no need for me to put it in my bookmarks because it's first on Kim du Toit's list of "Bloggers I Read Every Day." Posted by: Parallel on September 18, 2003 09:56 PMDid I say "bump?" Excuse me, poor choice of a word. I should have said that Acidman so kindly detoured the traffic off of GA. I-20, and on to one of Georgia's two-lane magnolia-lined roads. It was much appreciated, I might add. And I do apologize for using the word "bump"! Posted by: Laurac on September 18, 2003 09:59 PMI found you on my own. All because of evil bitches. (Wanted to see if anybody else's was worse than Eric's ex...) I'm here because it's all Jane's fault (of Daily Rant fame)....we were talking one day and she said i HAD to read this blog. I'm obedient, if nothing else. The second I sent you the link to my blog, Rob, you featured it. Presto Acidbath. Later I got a link from Vodkapundit which gave me an even bigger hit counter rolling. But you're my BlogFather. I got the link to this site from some other blogger, who was saying that you were going to stop blogging. "What's the big deal," I thought. I found out and have been hooked since then. Your words have that effect. Posted by: Juliette on September 18, 2003 11:07 PMYes, SugarMama, it is high school all over again; where you been, girl? P.S. Don't listen to a thing that "evil old Acidman" says about Ruby. She is divine! (And if I can say that not even being a dog lover, you know "she some kinda fine!") Posted by: Joni on September 19, 2003 08:09 AMHa! Thanks, Joni. Acidman is the only person who doesn't like my little baby. BFF? LYLAS? haha Posted by: sugarmama on September 19, 2003 08:52 AMI did get to you from an instalanche, but it was the other posts around that one that got me to stay. I picked up about 5-10 readers from my one instalanche. Posted by: Phelps on September 19, 2003 02:48 PMI smell a female conspiracy against me. I hate it when that happens. Posted by: Acidman on September 19, 2003 06:23 PMYou don't know what will catch Glenn Reynolds's eye. Here I write all this technical stuff about nuclear reactors, depleted uranium, etc, but does that get a link when it's topical? Ha! But when I wrote something about breasts...he thought that was inconsistent with the name of my site.
