Steve Goodman

I received this comment when I wrote a post about John Prine:

Can I put in a plug for John's good friend Steve Goodman?

Posted by charles austin at September 8, 2003 04:21 PM

.

Yes, sir, you may. Steve Goodman died far too young from lukemia. He bit the dust in 1984, after hanging around with John Prine for many years. Wouldn't you LOVE to be in a hotel room with THOSE TWO when they started sling-shotting ideas for songs? I would love that experience.

Steve left behind a few songs that I still love to play. "City of New Orleans" is perhaps the second-best train song of all time. Nothing will EVER beat "Orange Blossom Special," but Steve came close. "Won't you pass the paper bag that holds the bottle? I can feel the wheels a-rumbling 'neath the floor." Is that a good line, or what?

"Souvenirs" still breaks my heart. I lived that fucking song. And "Freaker's Ball" reminds me of things I did in the '70s. Yeah, life was all kinda crazy in those days. Maybe that's why Arnold's Oui interview about group-sex and dope-smoking doesn't bother me very much. Bejus. Times were different back then.

I have a couple of Steve Goodman CDs that I still listen to today. The guy's been dead almost 20 years now. But his music still touches me.

So YES, Charles. You SHOULD have mentioned him.

Especially since warren zevon went to that great studio in the sky yesterday.

Musicians die, but the music lives.

I have two blogs on Zevon on ICH. One is an interview with Hunter S. Thompson. Check it out. Zevon rocked balls-out!

Warren was a credit to his gender.

Growing up outside Chicago, I got to see him before he passed away. Too many favorites to list here, but I'll just mention one -- You Never Even Called Me By My Name. OK, two -- A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request.

R I P Warren. Hope I can meet my end with equal grace and dignity.

Two titans of rock, folk and country.

Having met Warren just weeks before discovering he has cancer made me appreciate that opportunity even more.

Warren's music has brought me great joy for many years and I will miss new creations greatly.

A-man, if you haven't already, get his last album, it is AMAZING.

Hey, thought this was a post about Steve Goodman. Anyhow, you can't mention Goodman without mentioning "Door Number Three" and "Blue Umbrella."

The first time I run across this blog I see something about one of my favorite song writers - Steve Goodman. It's good to know that there are others out there who appreciate a well composed song as well as the good turn of a phrase.

Go, Cubbies, Go!

I also like "There are men who love wimmen who love men."

i first heard a dying cub fan's last request, and that song stayed in my head for years, and made me curious. then i heard souvenirs, and it breaks my heart too.
