May 11, 2003listen to the mockingbirdI have a nest of mockingbirds somewhere in the woods in my back yard. Both the male and female birds become very agitated and aggressive if I walk around back there. The male has pecked me on the back of my head twice now, the mean little shit. But if I just sit on my back porch, they sing to me. I like the "cheater! cheater! cheater!" call, and I also enjoy the "too deep! too deep! too deep!" Then comes "turtle LOOP, turtle LOOP!" I can't make words out of everything they sing, but is sure is pleasing to my ear. If I take a guitar outside and play, the sound drives the birds into a frenzy. They land on the eave of my roof right over my head and start singing their crazy asses off. Yeah, I have a backyard band: Me and the Mockingbirds. We play well together, as long as I stay away from their nest.

Nice! Posted by: dragonfly jenny on May 11, 2003 07:49 AMDo you have birds known as "grackles" in your area? They are like large crows, but with very bad attitudes. They've been known to dive-bomb my cats from time to time. And they have the most annoying chattering I've every heard. (Maybe how they got their name?) Posted by: Joni on May 11, 2003 08:35 AMGrackles are nasty birds, but smart. I've shot a gazillion of them with my pellet gun. When I used to leave dog food and a water bowl on my back porch, I watched grackles pick up a piece of dog food, dunk it in the water bowl to soften it up and then eat it. They shit all over everything, too. Posted by: Acidman on May 11, 2003 08:51 AMWhen my sons were still living at home, they would sit on the steps and play with the mockingbird. They would whistle, he would mock them, then they would do something else and he would again copy it. This went on for several days and was a riot..........until the night at around 2am sat in a birch tree right outside my bedroom window and went through his entire repitoire over and over and.........About that time my older son came in our room and whispered, do you want me to go shake the tree so he will fly off??.....from the other side of the bed came a growl that sounded something like, NO, just get a saw and cut that f---g tree DOWN!! I still laugh about it whenever I hear the mockingbird. Posted by: loco on May 11, 2003 09:38 AMHeh, smart birds - I can understand that....
